Nowhere, not among the warriors at their festival,
nor with the girls dancing close in pairs,
nowhere did I see my dancer.

I am a dancer;
my pride, my lover,

—for love of her
these conch-shell bangles slip
from my wasting hands—
she's a dancer too.

Kuruntokai 31
attributed to Princess Ādimantiyār (2nd century CE)

Happy birthday, Vicki! :*

Thanks, Laura! I posted this poem because Vicki and I have just started belly dance class together. Kawakib raqs sharqi means 'stars of belly dance'.

This type of musical piece is called taqsim which literally means 'division'. It has exactly two minutes of slow, improvisational introduction, followed by slightly less than three minutes of rhythmic music with drumming. This ratio forms the golden section, (a+b)/a=a/b=~0.618=φ, which has been considered a harmonious proportion in visual art as well as music since ancient Greek times. When you mathematically analyze works of art as well as forms in nature derived from the Fibonacci sequence like sunflowers, the golden ratio keeps turning up. Bartók composed music that was structured according to this ratio.
